‘Haq_Hamara_Bhi_Toh_Hai@75,’ a campaign for providing basic legal assistance to persons confined in prisons and childcare institutions to commemorate the 75 th year of independence was organized by National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). Under the aegis of District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), Sonepat various Para Legal Volunteers were selected from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Law University, Sonepat to participate in the campaign. On 5 th November, the volunteers were first taken to DLSA Sonepat where they had an opportunity to interact with the Legal Aid Advocates as well as with the Hon’ble Chief Judicial Magistrate Cum Secretary, DLSA Sonepat Sh. Parmod Goyal. Thereafter the volunteers under the guidance of Legal Aid Advocates were taken to the Sonepat Jail. Awareness- The volunteers had opportunity to interact with the inmates who helped them to realize the practical realities of prisons in India and how the prison system works. The volunteers created awareness among inmates about their constitutional rights and other legal rights such as right to free legal aid provided under Article 39A of Constitution of India and S.304 of CrPc. Survey- A survey was conducted, and the inmates were asked about the details of their case. The survey was conducted with the objective of knowing the level of awareness among the inmates about their case and the problems which requires assistance. The survey helped the volunteers to understand the psyche of inmates. After completion of prison visits volunteers were taken to the Alternative dispute resolution (ADR) Centre on last day to understand the various ways in which people can resolve disputes without a trial. The students learnt about the Mediation as one of ADR mechanisms which can be used by people for resolving their disputes. The campaign was a very new experience for the student volunteers, and they learnt some practical aspects of working of Judicial System.
